This semester featured a variety of workshops led by students, faculty, staff and alumni. Each week living ArtsEngine students were offered opportunities to learn new skills and gain knowledge about creative endeavors from many different disciplines. Events included: Arudino, Makey-Makey and Soldering (LAE Grad, Ted Ivanac); Adobe Photoshop (RA Shalin Berman), After Effects (Peer Mentor Molly Gaffey); Premiere Pro (Duderstadt Center instructor Ryan Wilcox), Unreal Engine (Duderstadt Center instructor Sarah Eskandari); Costume Design (LAE alum Saawan Tiwari), Paper Engineering (Alum Emily Considine), Introduction to Drawing (Alum Grace Giordano); Introduction to the Recorder (LAE Grad Elijah Richards) and Sacred Harp (Peer Mentor Jack Morin). Living ArtsEngine Alumni NewsPast participants of the Living ArtsEngine program have been very active this year. In addition to encouraging, mentoring and sharing their talents with our current students, many have returned for our monthly social gatherings. Led by our Alumni program Coordinators, Erin Shimmel and Elijah Richardson, we have hosted an official alumni reunion as well as holiday events each month.

Saawan Tiwari graduated from UM in 2020 and moved to New York, where he has been designing since February. He is currently a costume designer and a teaching artist for Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City, and recently returned to Ann Arbor for a visit, where he led a student workshop for Living ArtsEngine. Saawan has found that the biggest challenge of working in this field is the fact that most designers are hired by word of mouth. He has clearly navigated this obstacle well, though, as he has designed for eight or nine productions since arriving in NYC. Saawan, coming from a family of engineers, feels that his approach to design is unique and follows a more logistical process that is informed by his interdisciplinary knowledge. Looking forward, Saawan expects to begin designing for the theatre exclusively. He hopes to
design for Broadway one day, and eventually become a teacher. Sawwan remembers his time with Living ArtsEngine fondly, reflecting on the time he spent with friends on campus. “I think Living Arts is really about the people you meet” he said, “If they were not in theatre, there was no way I was gonna get to know them, and Living Arts was a great way for me to meet all these people.” Some favorite memories include attending Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Michigan Theatre with enough LAE friends to fill four rows, and watching fellow LAE members build an igloo outside of their dorm. Saawan is still in touch with his Living Arts friends, and they have visited each other frequently since graduating. It was a pleasure to reconnect Saawan at his Engineering in Costume
workshop over Halloween, and the LAE community looks forward to welcoming him back again in the future and seeing where the exciting world of design takes him.
